Lamp with a tragic mask, unknown Italian workshop. Oil lamp, single-burner, Roman, Buchi type IX-b = Loeschcke type IXb, probably 2nd half 1st–beginning 2nd century. From a mold. Round vessel with arms drooping to the outer, separated from the disc by a convex edge; two bars arranged symmetrically on the arms. Concave, flat disc with two olive holes located on either side of a convex theatrical tragic mask. Medium-length wick channel decorated with a central groove and a small ventilation hole in the groove; rounded end of the burner. Slight trace of use dark discoloration near the wick hole. On the bottom, a convex inscription workshop trademark: COMMUNIS. Height c. 9 cm, width c. 4.4 cm, depth c. 3.3 cm., A single elongated object resembling a carved vessel or model boat fills the center of the image, shown in profile against a plain gray background. The object has an overall earthy brown and reddish-brown surface with areas of darker brown and muted orange tones, and a few lighter beige spots where the surface is worn or chipped. Its shape is curved on the underside with a flatter upper surface that includes raised ridges and small protrusions. The texture appears rough and slightly pitted in places, with visible signs of wear, scratches, and small irregularities across the surface. The lighting produces soft shadows along the contours, emphasizing the rounded form and the subtle variations in color and surface texture.
