Fragment of a sarcophagus mask. Preserved half of a face made from a single piece of wood. Above the low forehead is a preserved fragment of a wig; below is a recess with remnants of adhesive, where an eyebrow made of a different material was probably attached. Almond-shaped eye; preserved eye socket contains a thick layer of adhesive that once secured an inlaid eye of different material. Long, slender nose preserved in its entirety except for the left nostril cover. Mouth with thin lips and slightly upturned corners. Traces of mortar throughout, with minimal remnants of beige paint. On the reverse, a stepped niche is carved at mouth level, also showing traces of mortar. Chin has space for a beard. A knot is present on the right cheek. Face height: 17 cm. Date: c. 1400–c. 1295 BC, New Kingdom, late 18th Dynasty decline. Find location: Deir el-Medina. Object type: sarcophagus mask. Dimensions: height 18.5 cm, width 9 cm, depth 4.5 cm., A vertical piece of weathered wood with a rough, carved profile resembling a face is shown against a plain gray background; the wood displays several shades of brown and tan with visible grain, cracks, and worn edges, and a dark metal screw with a round head protrudes from the upper side of the wood.
