Fragment of a block with the Sheshonq cartouche;, Sheshonq ruler of Egypt; ca. 945–735 BC, ca. 945–735 BC; Third Intermediate Period, 22nd Dynasty, Egypt. Bas-relief, cartouche with hieroglyphs; royal names enclosed in an oval cartouche double-wound rope signifying protection. A fragment of the relief shows the cartouche of Pharaoh Sheshonq; it is uncertain whether this refers to the dynasty founder biblical Shishak or one of four other rulers of this name. Hieroglyphic texts could be written vertically or horizontally; the characters inside the cartouche point to the left, indicating the pharaoh's figure faced the same direction. Dimensions: height 15.5 cm, width 13 cm, depth 6 cm; weight 1.138 kg., A roughly triangular, textured rock with a rough, speckled surface sits upright on a flat surface; the rock displays a mottled pattern of gray, black, white, and beige tones with a small irregular patch of reddish-brown near its upper-middle area, and the background and base surface are smooth shades of gray.
