Fragment of a block with the Sheshonq cartouche, Sheshonq ruler of Egypt; ca. 945–715 BC. Cartouches were processed loops of double-wound rope signifying protection; this relief fragment shows the cartouche of Pharaoh Sheshonq of the 22nd Dynasty. It is unknown whether this refers to the dynasty founder the biblical Shishak or to one of four other rulers of that name. Royal cartouches and hieroglyphic texts could be written vertically or horizontally; the characters inside this cartouche point to the left, indicating the pharaoh's figure faced the same direction. ca. 945–ca. 735 BC; Third Intermediate Period, 22nd Dynasty, Egypt. Bas-relief; height 15.5 cm, width 13 cm, depth 6 cm, weight 1.138 kg., A rough triangular stone fragment sits on a neutral surface against a gray background, showing a carved oval design with horizontal recessed bands and rounded edges; the stone's surface is textured and granular with a mix of dark gray, light gray, beige, and black tones, and a few lighter cream-colored carved lines accentuate the carved pattern.
