Orientalising pyxis with an animal frieze in the Silhouette style, Images of animals, Middle Corinthian period, cats. Thin-walled pyxis with a straight rim, slightly concave body walls, and a flat bottom. Small vices mounted horizontally just near the edge of the rim. The main decorative band, bounded at the top and bottom by a thin line of varnish, depicts figures of animals executed using the silhouette technique. Between the silhouettes there are simplified filling ornaments. Clay color: 5 Y 8/2 pale yellow Varnish color: 5 Y 2.5/1 black 590–570 BC dated to the Middle Corinthian period, Corinth. Pyxis vessel. Height 5.3 cm, width 10.2 cm, depth 8.5 cm, weight 0.102 kg., A round shallow vessel viewed from above with a circular interior decorated with concentric rings; the vessel is primarily tan and black with a warm yellowish-tan interior and dark black rings, a few worn areas showing mottled tan and brown, and two small opposed handles protruding from the rim; the exterior rim shows a patterned edge in tan and black, and the background is a smooth gradient of gray.
