Pyxis with a duck motif. Greek, Boeotian, early 7th century BC. Clay yellowish/light gray to very pale brown with brown varnish and dark brown matte paint; red paint light reddish brown. Vessel with flat bottom, walls slightly flaring toward a profiled rim. Banded decoration: upper band shows a row of birds walking to the right in silhouette with lowered heads and raised wings; dotted rosettes between pairs of birds. Below, decoration enclosed in two wide dark bands consisting of two watered-firnis stripes and a zigzag line. Dimensions: depth 5.5 cm; diameter 7.3 cm; wall thickness 0.4 cm; height 6.5 cm; width 8.8 cm; weight 0.098 kg., A short cylindrical ceramic vessel sits against a plain gray background, showing a beige to light tan base color with decorative bands in darker brown and black. The rim is slightly flared and darker, with visible wear and chipping revealing lighter beige beneath. Around the upper part of the vessel are dark painted motifs including abstract birdlike shapes and clustered dot marks in black. Midsection bands alternate between solid dark brown stripes and lighter tan areas with wavy brush marks in a muted brown. The lower section repeats horizontal dark bands with some areas of faded paint and surface abrasion, and the base edge shows a slightly darker brown rim with small chips. Overall the colors visible are beige, tan, light brown, dark brown, black, and hints of off-white from worn areas.
