Platter with a gold medallion of Theodosius II, Byzantine workshop. Flat platter on a ring-shaped foot with profiled inner edges. In the central part of the platter is a coin of Theodosius II 408–450. Made using casting, probably in a mold of foundry earth; the foot was cast separately and later soldered on. The platter was likely made to fit a specific coin, as shown by the precisely fitted hole. Gilding on the frame and a stripe along the rim was likely done by the amalgam chemical gilding technique. Inscription letters were struck with single stamps. Ornament executed by punching; spiral elements additionally joined using boning. Traces of filing smoothing of the surface are visible on the underside of the bowl. After 430, Roman Empire 27 BC–476. Found in Toulouse.
