Platter with a gold medallion of Theodosius II. Flat silver platter on a ring-shaped foot with profiled inner edges; in the central part is a gold coin/medallion of Theodosius II reigned 408–450. Made after 430 CE. Cast using a mold of foundry earth; the foot was cast separately and later soldered on. The coin was fitted precisely into a purposely made hole. Gilding on the frame and a stripe along the rim was likely done by amalgam chemical gilding. Inscription letters were struck with single stamps. Ornament executed by punching; spiral elements joined using bending. Traces of filing smoothing visible on the underside of the bowl related to manufacture. Byzantine/Roman Empire workmanship. Vessel; diameter 18.6 cm, height 2 cm, weight 543.71 g., A large circular metallic object fills the frame, showing a textured surface with mottled shades of gray and silver and hints of darker charcoal and muted brown; a recessed central ring creates a raised inner disk with similar rough texture, and a small round element with a gold color sits at the center; the background around the object is a flat light gray.
