Platter with a gold medallion of Theodosius II. Flat silver platter on a ring-shaped foot with profiled inner edges. In the central part is a coin/medallion of Theodosius II reigned 408–450. Made after 430, Roman/Byzantine Empire. Cast using a foundry mold; foot cast separately and soldered on. The coin was set into a precisely fitted hole. Gilding on the frame and a stripe along the rim applied by amalgam chemical gilding. Inscription letters struck with single stamps. Ornament punched; spiral elements joined by brazing. Traces of filing/smoothing visible on the underside of the bowl from manufacture. Material: silver with gold medallion; foundry, casting and punching techniques. Vessel; diameter 18.6 cm, height 2 cm, weight 543.71 g., A circular metal object with a raised rim in a light silver color surrounds a weathered central surface showing mottled tones of gray, brown, blue, and hints of green and purple; the center contains a round, slightly raised medallion in a warm gold color set inside concentric decorative bands in darker metallic tones, and the overall appearance shows patches of tarnish and textured wear.
