Bull-headed protoma, vessel decoration, unknown Urartian workshop. Protoma depicting a stylized bull's head with linear details: large convex eyeballs surrounded by a straight line, two horizontal lines marking the nostrils; small protruding ears plastically modeled; schematically chipped horns slightly curved upward. The neck is slightly elongated with a triangular bulge at the front. At the bottom rear is a rectangular cutout that served to mount the protoma on the rim of a cauldron. Typical Urartian art decoration of cauldrons. 8th–7th century BC Urartu, ca. 850–585 BC. Near East; manufactured in Urartu. Decoration; weight 134 g., A sculpted head of an animal with upward curved horns, a snout, and an ear visible on one side, shown against a plain light gray background; the surface shows a weathered patina in shades of reddish-brown, dark brown, and some greenish-blue spots, with areas of darker speckling and lighter worn patches; the object is mounted on a thin white support that is partly visible.
