Head of Dionysus, A small terracotta head of Dionysus, part of a larger lost sculpture. The figure has a large, full mouth, almond-shaped eyes with distinct eyelids, and malleable eyebrow arches; the nose is damaged with losses on the chin, above the left eyebrow, and on the right cheek. Hair, partially covered, frames the head with a center parting. Head decoration consists of a ribbon and rosettes, now partially preserved; identification, though uncertain, is suggested by the elaborate headdress. Traces of red-brown polychrome are visible on fragments such as the hair and lips. 5th–4th century BC previously dated 3rd quarter of the 5th century BC. Tarentum. Terracotta figurine; h. 6.8 cm, w. 9 cm, d. 4.5 cm., A weathered sculpted fragment showing the profile of a human face mounted on a clear cylindrical stand, with a large irregular hat or headdress extending above and behind the head; the surface shows rough, eroded texture and traces of pigment in muted tones including beige, tan, brown, pale pink, and hints of reddish color, set against a smooth neutral gray background.
