Head of Dionysus, unknown author. A small terracotta head of Dionysus, part of a larger lost sculpture. The figure has a large, full mouth, almond-shaped eyes with distinct eyelids, and malleable eyebrow arches; the nose is damaged. Losses are visible on the chin, above the left eyebrow, and on the right cheek. Hair, partially covered, frames the head with a central parting at the forehead. Head decoration of a ribbon and rosettes is partially preserved; identification though uncertain is suggested by the elaborate headdress. Traces of red-brown polychrome remain on areas such as the hair and lips. Dated 5th–4th century BC previously 3rd quarter of the 5th century BC. Place of origin: Tarentum. Figurine; height 6.8 cm, width 9 cm, depth 4.5 cm., The image shows a weathered sculpted head made of a tan-brown material mounted on a slender clear support, featuring a stylized face with closed eyes and a neutral mouth, and surrounded by a headdress or hair composed of rounded forms and draped pieces; the surface shows areas of wear and slight reddish discoloration, with visible texture and small chips against a plain gray background.
