Hand cross, Ethiopian workshop. The arms of the cross are each formed by three stacked discs adjacent to one side of the square forming the central part of the cross. The handle, in the shape of an elongated rectangle, merges into a rectangular plaque with a rhomboid projection at the lower edge. Decoration on both sides. Side A: Within the square is a carved motif of a cross made of braid. From the base of the cross grow stylized flowers resembling tulips—one on the left and two on the right. Within the discs is a quatrefoil motif made of braid. The handle is decorated with braid. The plaque is decorated with braid framed in a zigzag strip. The inset is decorated with a braid. Side B: Square decorated with a crystal ornament; discs divided diagonally into eight wedges. The handle is decorated with a braid. The plate is decorated with a braided quatrefoil motif. The inset is decorated with a braided motif. 20th century, Ethiopia. Cross. Height 27.5 cm; width 10.5 cm., A carved wooden object with a long vertical shaft and a cross-shaped top, showing an overall tan and brown color with darker carved lines; the top has a central square panel with carved plant-like motifs surrounded by a group of round medallions each featuring a geometric knot design, and the shaft is decorated with a repeating interlaced pattern leading to a square panel at the bottom bearing another geometric knot design and a small diamond-shaped pendant below it; the background is a smooth light gray.
