Fragment of a stele with an inscription in Arabic, unknown creator scribe-copyist, excavations, Islamic art, Arabic culture, inscriptions, Arabic inscriptions, Kufi script, Quran, Arabic language, Nubia, Nubian crafts. The surface of the block is smoothed; the inscription in Kufi script contains a fragment of the Quran 67:1. It is probably a funerary stele. 2nd half of the 11th–1st half of the 14th century. Origin: Faras, Sudan. Stele; height 32.0 cm, width 34.0 cm, depth 12.0 cm., A roughly rectangular block with a rough, pitted surface sits centered against a uniform light gray background, the block showing a textured, weathered appearance in shades of brown, beige, tan, and hints of darker brown in small pits and indentations; the top and sides display irregular grooves and a few lighter patches, while a thin flat support in a light wood color is visible under the block at the front.
