Title

Red panda standing on its hind legs, Panda Research Base, Chengdu, China

Caption

The red panda is not closely related to the giant panda; it is the only living species of the genus Ailurus (Ailurus fulgens), also called the lesser panda and the red cat-bear. Due to habitat loss and poaching, it is classified as 'vulnerable' by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with a wild population of less than 10,000. It is slightly larger than a house cat and feeds mainly on bamboo, but, unlike the Giant panda, it is omnivorous and, besides bamboo, also eats a variety of other foods (it seems to be very fond of fruit, e.g., apples)
