Paris is the novel of the contemporary capital. It is the contrast between wealth and misery, the bourgeoisie and the working class, the order versus the anarchy. The volume was published during the Dreyfus Affair, just after the lawsuit brought against Émile Zola following the publication of "J'accuse... !"
