Field Marshal Douglas Haig (1861-1928), Count Haig. Commander in chief of the British armies in France during the First World War, after having served in India, Sudan and during the Boer War. Directed, inter alia, the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Viewed by his contemporaries as an inhumane general sending his soldiers to the butchery. Named Marshal in 1917. Nicknamed " Haig the Butcher" by historians.
