Henry IV (1553-1610), King of France (1589-1610), King of Navarre under the title Henry III (1572-1610), he was the first Bourbon to be kinged during the Capetienne dynasty. Son of Jeanne of Albret and Antoine de Bourbon, father of Louis XIII. Protestant chief, he was a contemporary of the religious wars. He escaped the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572, and once he had conquered the French throne and converted to the Catholic faith, he signed the Edict of Nantes, which promulgated the freedom of denomination. He was married first to Marguerite de Valois (Queen Margot), then to Marie de' Medici. He was assassinated by Ravaillac.
