Title
Rescuing the temple of Ramses in Egypt (1968)
Caption
Egypt
September 22, 1968 marked the beginning of rescue work on the two temples of Ramses II, on the site of Abu Simbel. This was the largest-scale rescue operation in the entire history of archeology. The goal was to keep the lake, formed by the construction of the Aswan Dam, from flooding the temples with their giant statues. In the photo, the stone face of one of the statues of Ramses II is meticulously put back into place.
