Caption

Buying camlets in a shop, Yokohama, [Japan], 1865. 'In the sketch we have engraved...as an illustration of the social life and manners of the people of Japan, our Artist and Correspondent at Yokohama has delineated a scene of every-day occurrence in the shops of that busy city. The draper and his assistants, who are not less eager than their fellow-tradesmen in London or Paris to effect a sale, have unrolled a piece of camlet, and are showing it, with voluble commendations, to a purchaser, who is feeling the cloth with both hands to prove its texture, and inspecting its appearance with a dubious eye. His companions are looking on, meanwhile, and probably assisting his judgment with a word or two of advice'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865.
