Model of a fish-ladder for salmon to ascend milldams and weirs, on view at the office of the Inspector of Fisheries, in Whitehall, 1864. 'Mr. Ffennell, the Inspector of Fisheries for England, has now for exhibition, at his office, 8 Richmond-terrace, Whitehall, a model of a fish-ladder, which is represented in our Engraving. The author of this valuable contrivance was the late Mr. Smith, of Deanston. Its object is to enable salmon and other fish to ascend milldams, and similar impediments, in their course up the rivers to their spawning-grounds; while the waste water is, by this apparatus, so economised as not to interfere with the working power of the mill. Mr. Ffennell's model is provided with running water, and live fish are seen to ascend the ladder. This is a very interesting sight, as well as a most useful practical illustration of the matter, which much concerns the improvement of the salmon fisheries of this country'.
