Alexandra Ivanova Uspenskaia, head-and-shoulders portrait, facing left, between 1870 and 1875. While discussing Count Leo Tolstoy's unsympathetic attitude toward Russia's political exiles, Kennan recalled the famous writer's refusal to respond to a plea for help by Madam Uspenskaia, a wife of one of the political convicts at Kara.
