The late General Sir H. Taylor, G.C.B., 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Maull and Co. British army officer who died '...in the ninety-third year of his age, entered the military service of the East India Company so long ago as 1798. As a lieutenant in the 10th Madras Native Infantry he fought under Sir Arthur Wellesley at the battle of Assaye, in 1803...In 1832 Colonel Taylor was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general, with the command of the northern division of [the Madras] army, which he held during five years. He was actively employed all that time in suppressing rebellions in the Vizagapatam, Kimmedy, and Ganjam districts, with a force of which more than fifteen regiments formed part....He gave six sons to the Indian service.
