Cock-Fighting at Manilla, 1857. Gambling in the Philippines. 'I think the Indians' idea of paradise is one vast cockpit...The betting almost beats Epsom; but, to their praise be it said, they are most honourable in paying what they have lost...The cock's spurs are as sharp as razors, and often "rooster" falls dead at first start. Should a cock show any timidity, the n***ers yell a high-pressure shriek in the most frantic manner; and, as there is always an unfortunate white feather among the "gallos," the above sound often fills the air on Sunday afternoons. The match commences by two fellows starting the cocks, and getting their steam up. As soon as No. 1 has beaten No. 2 there is a short rest, and the next couple come on'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857.
