The War with China - Interior of the Anunghoy Bogue Forts, sketched after their demolition by the "Nankin" and the "Calcutta", 1857. Second Opium War - fort destroyed by Royal Navy ships. 'These forts, generally known as the Bocca Tigris, or Bogues, were destroyed in detail, with scarcely any loss on our side - one man or boy killed and three wounded. On the side of the Chinese there was considerable loss, the Mandarins having taken the precaution to remove all the boats from the Wang Tong Island forts, so that when our boats' crews landed the Chinamen had to swim for it. Many of the drowning wretches were picked up by our boats'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857.
