Caption
The Seven Works of Mercy, 1504. Other Title(s): Polyptych with the Seven Works of Charity. The seven Corporal Works of Mercy: To feed the hungry; To give water to the thirsty; To clothe the naked; To shelter the homeless; To visit the sick; To visit the imprisoned, or ransom the captive; To bury the dead. A town in Holland is the setting for a narrative strip showing how a good Christian should help the needy. In almost all the scenes, Christ appears among the onlookers. The scenes give a sense of town life around 1500. This is one of the many art works severely damaged when Protestants cleansed Holland's Catholic churches of what they considered idolatrous imagery in 1566.
