Caption

New Uniform of the Coldstream Guards, 1856. 'The Night Sentry has been made almost luxuriously comfortable, even in the most severe weather, by the new great-coat...The Drill Sergeant's collar...has been considerably reduced in depth, and the gold facings and star have been decreased in proportion...The Colour Sergeant has now a plain blue cloth collar, decorated with a star, but no gold lace. The Drum Major's massive epaulets have been exchanged for wings of gold lace with bullion fringe...The Barrack Guard have had their convenience consulted by the substitution of the new unstiffened blue forage cap with white band for the hard unbending cap they used to wear, The Drummer's new collar, opening in front, and narrower, must make him feel more at ease...The Major's uniform has...a star and crown [on] his new collar...'.
