Omedsk and Obungo, at Nagasaki, 1856. Treaty between Japan and Great Britain: '...we were ushered in, and found the four principal personages seated, or rather squatted, on the ground...The conference began, and after some conversation our ratified treaty was produced in the simplest style from an envelope, and the seal and subscribed name of Clarendon shown to them, with a little explanation thereof. Meanwhile, the Japanese treaty was brought in by their officials. A large box was opened, and the silk-covered book or treaty carefully unwrapped from its crape cover inside a lacquered case, its silken cords loosed; and all being ready, our Admiral stood forth...and tendered to the Governor, Araoo Iwamino Rami, the treaty of friendship in the name of her Majesty; and the Governor of Nagasaki, on the part of the Emperor, presented the Japanese version...'.
