Spirochete, Chicago, 1938. 'The Tribune says: Syphilis Story Well Told in a Good Drama...A dramatic representation of the history, treatment and study of syphilis; staged in the Blackstone Theatre...under the direction of Harry Minturn. By Charles Collins:..a valuable contribution to anti-syphilis propaganda...a dramatic spectacle...before an attentive and responsive audience...[which] presents a mass of material, historical and clinical, related to its subject in a decidedly interesting way, and, although it is largely a lecture illustrated by brief dramatic tableaux, it fulfills the average playgoer's demand for a "good show". The Federal Theatre Project, created by the U.S. Works Progress Administration in 1935, was designed to conserve and develop the skills of theater workers, re-employ them on public relief, and to bring theater to thousands in the United States who had never before seen live theatrical performances.
