Caption

Scene in the Place, at Calais, 1854. Allied personnel in France before leaving to fight in the Crimean War. 'French soldiers are not restricted to be very close shavers - in the literal reuse, at least; but they do shave now and then, nevertheless; and the manner in which this operation was performed in the Grand Place of Calais was somewhat amusing, from the air of cool nonchalance, with which it was done. Every man who had his chin or cheek rasped under the shadow of Cardinal Richelieu's bust, appeared to feel that he was destined to be shaved there all his life'.
