'The City of London, the University of Oxford, and the University of Cambridge...laid before their Sovereign [Queen Victoria] the expression of their indignation at the endeavour by the Bishop of Rome [the Pope] to exercise a power which the realm of England has almost ignored...The Corporation having formed in one of the large reception-rooms to the right of the staircase, had the honour of being first introduced to her Majesty [Queen Victoria], who was seated at the end of St. George's-hall...'.
