Construction of the seven-storey Royal Scot Hotel at Percy Circus began in 1970. The topping out ceremony was held on 23rd March 1972 and the hotel was officially opened on 14th November 1972. It took its name from the Royal Scots Regiment, the pipe and drum band of which marched past the hotel as part of the opening ceremony. When it opened, the hotel had just fewer than 350 bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, as well as a restaurant, coffee shop, cocktail bar and lounge bar, a functions suite, and car park.
