'And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, & behold, his daughter came out to meet him', 19th century? Biblical scene, from Judges 11: 34: the judge Jephthah, after leading the Israelites to victory in battle against the Ammonites, is greeted by his daughter, who celebrates his return with a tambourine. Jephthah is shocked as he realises he must offer up the life of his daughter to God as the consequence of making a rash vow to sacrifice whatever would come out of the door of his house first. Engraving.
