Group of men in uniform in front of a tipi, Buckinghamshire, 1913. Group portrait of scout leaders with chainmail epaulettes. British soldiers on active service in the Sudan (1898) and during the Boer War (1899-1902) wore epaulettes made of chainmail to protect against sword blows to the shoulder. The Boy Scouts Association was formed in 1910 by Robert Baden-Powell.
