The capture of Andreas Hofer, 1809, (1936). 'Die Gefangennahme Andreas Hofers, 1809'. The Tyrolean Rebellion of 1809 was an uprising of peasants in the County of Tyrol (which today lies between Italy and Austria), against the occupation by French and Bavarian troops. The leader of the rebellion, Tyrolean innkeeper and drover Andreas Hofer (1767-1810), was captured by Italian troops in January 1810, court-martialled and executed. Hofer became a martyr in Germany and Austria, and a rallying symbol against the power of Napoleon. From "Bilder Deutscher Geschichte", (Pictures of German History), No.12, cigarette card album.
