Causey Arch, Causey Road, Stanley, County Durham, c1955-c1980. A general view of the Causey Arch, a wagonway bridge that spans the Causey Burn, seen from one of the banks and showing the single arch. The bridge was constructed in 1727 by Ralph Wood for Mr Wortley and Colonel Liddell, and was dated and signed at the foor of the bridge by B Horne. It is sandstone with ashlar dressings, and consists of a single round arch, with wide buttresses and possibly originally without parapets. The bridge is 105ft long and 80ft high, and is considered to be the first railway bridge in the world.
