Caption
Barry Statue and Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, 1953. Vintage postcard. Officially known as the Pennsylvania State House, this Georgian building was built in the mid 18th century. It was the site of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and where the US Constitution was drafted and signed in 1787. The bell tower was the original home of the Liberty Bell, one of the most famous symbols of the American Revolution. The statue in front of the building depicts Commodore John Barry (1745-1803), who served in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War and is known as 'the Father of the American Navy'.
