The fortress at Peniche, Portugal, 2009. The town of Peniche is dominated by the well preserved fort (fortaleza) near the harbour. Construction began in 1557 and was completed in 1645. It achieved notoriety under Salazar's dictatorship when he used it to incarcerate political prisoners.
