Caption

'A Fresh Drink from a Tender Hand Tastes Twice as Good', c1933 (1938). A woman offers a drink to members of the SA marching in a parade. Founded in c1919, the Sturmabteilung (SA) was the paramilitary wing of the Nazi party. Its members were known as the 'Brownshirts' because of the colour of their uniforms. The SA played an important part in Hitler's rise to power in Germany but its significance was effectively ended when its leaders were killed in the 'Night of the Long Knives' in 1934, with the rival Schutzstaffel (SS) taking over its role. This photograph was probably taken in 1933 after the Nazis came to power in Germany. From Geschichte der SA (History of the SA) by Wilhelm Rehm, published by Franz Eher Nachf, 1938.
