Title
Upper Colonnade Street, Palmyra, Syria.
Caption
Upper Colonnade Street, Palmyra, Syria. Situated in an oasis in the Syrian desert halfway between the Mediterranean and the Euphrates, Palmyra grew up as an important caravan town on the old Silk Road. The site has extensive ruins dating from Roman times. This colonnade is on what was the main east to west thoroughfare of the city, the Decumanus, which was once lined by around 1500 Corinthian columns.
