Excavating a tube railway: at work in the 'shield', Great Northern and City Railway, London, c1903 (1903). The Great Northern & City Railway constructed underground tunnels to allow electrified trains to run from Finsbury Park to Moorgate opening in 1904 and was bought in 1913 by the Metropolitan Railway. The large underground tunnels accommodated a large mainline train unlike the tube network and became the foundation for the Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines.
