Departure of Bishop Odo from Rochester, 1088 (1905). The half-brother of William the Conqueror, Odo (1030-1097) was Bishop of Bayeux and was made Earl of Kent after the Norman Conquest. Odo was imprisoned for five years in 1082 after he planned a military expedition to Italy. After William died, his two sons, Robert Curthose and William Rufus disputed the English crown. Odo backed Robert, but after his claim was defeated in the Rebellion of 1088 William II banished Odo to Normandy. From Cassell's Illustrated History of England, Vol. I.
