Caption

The Pantheon and the Piazza della Rotunda, Rome, Italy. Built in the 2nd century during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian as a temple to all Rome's gods, the Pantheon was consecrated as a Christian church in the 7th century. The best preserved example of monumental Roman architecture, it was highly influential on the architects of major public buildings in Europe and America from the Renaissance to the 19th century. The obelisk in the centre of the piazza dates from the reign of Rameses II and comes from the Temple of Ra at Heliopolis. Stereoscopic card detail.
