Caption
Police raid on the National Rent Offices at Loughrea, Ireland, 1887. A scene during the Irish Land League agitation. Founded in 1879, with Charles Stewart Parnell as its president, the Irish Land League campaigned on behalf of tenant farmers with the intention of reducing rents to a fair level. Its ultimate objective was to provide tenants with the opportunity of owning the land they worked on. The League organised rent strikes, which led to evictions by police acting on behalf of landlords in what became known as the Land War, which lasted from 1880 until 1892. A print from The Illustrated London News, 1st January 1887.
