Boat of the 'Deerhound' rescuing Captain Raphael Semmes, 1864 (c1880). Semmes was a Confederate naval officer during the American Civil War. He commanded the CSS 'Alabama', a prolific commerce raider that captured 69 vessels as prizes. The 'Alabama' was finally sunk after a battle with the Union warship USS 'Kearsage' off Cherbourg, France on 19th June 1864. Semmes and 41 of his crew were rescued by the British yacht 'Deerhound'.
