'Vicar General', 1902. Charles Alfred Cripps KC MP, British barrister and politican. Cripps (1852-1941) became a QC in 1890 and served as Attorney General to the Prince of Wales from 1895 until 1914. He served as a Conservative MP for Stroud (1895-1900), Stretford (1901-1906) and Wycombe (1910-1914) before accepting a peerage. In 1923 he crossed the floor of the House of Lords to join the Labour Party and was Leader of the Labour Peers from 1928-1931. A devout Anglican, Cripps was closely involved in Church affairs and served as Vicar-General of York in 1900 and of Canterbury in 1902. Cartoon from Vanity Fair, 10th April 1902.
