The Grand Duke Nicholas announcing the treaty of peace, San Stefano, Turkey, 19th century. The Preliminary Treaty of San Stefano was a treaty between Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed at the end of the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78. The treaty also established Bulgaria as an autonomous principality. From Cassell's Illustrated History of England, volume X, published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin and Co. (London, Paris and New York, 19th century).
