'Cairo, looking south west, across the city to the pyramids, Egypt', 1905. 'The high-walled building on the extreme left is the mosque of Rifa'iyeh. Between the dome jwith the peak awry and the distant sandhills ... is the court of the oldest mosque in Cairo. It was built in AD 877-879 by Ibn Tulûn, the first independent Sultan of Egypt.'
