Caption

James II taking leave of Louis XIV of France, 1689. After he was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, James II went into exile in France, where he was welcomed by Louis XIV. Louis was at war with William of Orange, James' replacement on the throne of England and Scotland, and encouraged James to travel to Ireland, which still recognised him as its king. Louis supported James with a force of 6000 troops. A print from Cassell's Illustrated History of England.
