William Ballantine, Serjeant-at-Law, 1882. Ballantine (1812-1887) became a Serjeant-at-Law in 1856. He enjoyed a reputation as a formidable cross-examiner of witnesses in court and was involved in some of the most celebrated cases of the day, commanding very high fees.
